School Counseling

My name is Jennifer Swasey and I am the School Counselor for Francestown, Greenfield and Hancock Elementary  Schools.  I have been a school counselor for 15 years.  I joined the ConVal School District in 2014.  It is amazing to belong to a progressive school district with wonderful students and supportive families

The ConVal School Counseling Mission Statement:  The school counselor’s mission is to provide all students with a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student achievement through maximum growth in academic, career and personal/social domains.

The role of a school counselor is to provide culturally competent services to students, parents/guardians, school staff and the community through school social skills curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system support.  Elementary school counselors provide students with a comprehensive, developmental and school counseling program that is based on district and New Hampshire state standards and the American School Counselor Association(ASCA) national model.

Second Step Curriculum

Second Step is an research based program that teaches empathy, emotional literacy, emotion management, problem solving, self regulation, and executive function skills. In addition to Second Step, many of the classroom guidance lessons are delivered through the support of children’s literature, writing and drawing activities, and role plays.

Each grade level receives lessons on the following units and subjects:

– Skills for Learning (listening, focusing attention, self talk, being assertive)

– Empathy (identifying feelings, respecting differences, showing compassion)

– Emotion Management (handling anger, frustration, embarrassment, worry)

– Problem Solving (steps for solving problems, taking responsibility, peer pressure)

– Career awareness and exploration
